2026 Packing for Safari Guide: What You Really Need (and What You Don’t)
When preparing for a safari, it’s easy to overthink it, trip length, temperature swings, activities. We did the same… until last summer.
With strict weight limits on our transfer flights in South Africa, we were forced to pack light, and in hindsight, it was one of the best decisions we made. Laundry service at John X Safaris was exceptional and the weather stayed fairly consistent, and layering covered any small changes.
What we learned? You really only need one great pair of boots, a comfortable pair of casual shoes for after the hunt, and a handful of versatile pieces. Whether you’re out hunting or enjoying an excursion, the dress is nearly the same. Evenings were relaxed, though we did bring a couple of nicer outfits for dinners and photos.
The takeaway: pack smart, pack light, and focus on quality pieces that work across every part of the experience.

Why Safari Clothing Matters
When embarking on a safari, selecting the right clothing is essential, not just for style, but for comfort, protection, and performance in the field. Thoughtful choices in jackets, breathable apparel, and protective hats can truly enhance your experience.
This guide covers the essentials for both men and women, helping you build a smart, functional wardrobe so you can focus on the adventure itself.

Choosing the Right Safari Gear
Preparing for safari is about balancing comfort, durability, and practicality.
Capsule Wardrobe Essentials
- Neutral colors: Greens, khakis, tans, and browns allow for easy mixing while blending into the environment
- Layering: Mornings can be cool, afternoons warm—light layers are key
- Footwear: One dependable pair of boots is all you need
- Avoid bright colors: They attract insects and can disturb wildlife
Specialized Safari Clothing Features
- Fabric: Breathable, lightweight, and quick-drying materials perform best
- Protection: Look for built-in sun protection and insect resistance
- Brands to trust: Kevin’s, Orvis, Sitka, and KÜHL offer both performance and classic cotton option
Accessories That Make a Difference
- Headwear: Wide-brim hats and sunglasses are essential
- Daypack: Carry water, binoculars, and daily essentials
- Travel bags: Invest in durable options from Filson, Patagonia, Orvis, and Bennett Winch
Choosing the right gear isn’t about overpacking—it’s about bringing pieces that work hard for you.

Packing Smart for Your Safari
Packing for safari is an art—balancing minimalism with preparedness while working within strict luggage limits.
Luggage Guidelines
- Soft-sided bags only for bush flights (think 40L duffels and flexible travel bags)
- Weight limits: Typically around 15kg (including carry-on)
Kevin’s Packing Philosophy
- Pack light: Most lodges offer daily laundry
- Think versatile: Pieces should work for hunting, travel, and relaxing
